Toronto architectural icon Frank Gehry chose his hometown to build his first residential tower in Canada, calling it “a work of art” on Wednesday.

Gehry, 94, joined the development team of Forma – comprised of Great Gulf Group, Dream and Westdale Properties, and theatre kingpin David Mirvish — to celebrate the official start of construction of the project’s east tower on Duncan and King Sts. on Wednesday.

“King St. is where I used to hang out as a kid — my grandma’s house was on Beverly St. a few blocks from here and so I knew the neighbourhood pretty well and I still felt roots here,” said Gehry at the ground-breaking ceremony. “I feel part of it, I couldn’t help it, you can’t avoid it.”

The project calls for the construction of two towers with a public space, a dedicated space for OCAD and a free art gallery. The west tower will be 84 storeys.
